Mastitis is an umbrella term for an inflammatory or infectious disease of the mammary gland.

In dogs, there are a number of underlying causes including:

- Blastomyces dermatitidis
- Staphylococcus spp
- Streptococcus spp
- Escherichia coli
- Klebsiella spp

Mastitis can lead to septicemia and death in puppies which feed from contaminated milk[1].
