Nikkomycin

Nikkomycin Z is a novel peptide antifungal drug used for treatment of canine fungal infections.

This chitin synthase inhibitor was a byproduct of Streptomyces tendae fermentation[1] and has recently undergone clinical trials in the USA[2][3].

This drugs functions as substrate analogue and inhibits chitin synthase at its catalytic site acts. It has been shown to act synergistically with another chitin synthetase inhibitor caspofungin and the two drugs are sometimes used together in treatment of resistant fungal diseases[4][5].

Recommended dose rate in dogs is 250 mg in dogs under 15 kg or 500 mg in heavier dogs, given twice daily for 60 days[8].
