Coughing, defined as the forceful expulsion of air from the lungs has many causes in dogs.

Coughing may be acute or chronic, and causes include:

- Congestive heart failure
- Heartworm disease
- Lymphoma
- Bronchial carcinoma

Ultrasonography, radiographs and CT/MRI imaging are indicated to determine whether the cause of coughing is primary pulmonary or secondary pulmonary disease.
