Idiopathic megaesophagus

From Dog

Idiopathic megaesophagus is a rare presentation of megaesophagus characterized by severe, often fatal dilation of the esophagus.

This disease commonly occurs in older large-breed dogs and is thought to be of myogenic origin, with normal upper esophageal and lower esophageal sphincter tone.

On barium radiographs, the esophagus is usually distended.

Diagnosis is based on exclusion of other causes of megaesophagus.
