Pruritus is a term used to characterize a sensation of itchiness.
In dogs, this manifests as scratching, biting and rubbing of the affected area against objects to alleviate a pain sensation, usually involving the skin.
Pruritus is a symptom rather than a diagnosis and has many causes.
Commonly observed diseases which cause pruritus include:
- Flea allergy dermatitis
- Sarcoptes spp mange
- Otodectes cynotis ear mites
- Xenopsylla cheopis and Trichodectes canis lice
- Malassezia spp dermatitis
- Otitis externa ear infections - especially Malassezia spp
Treatment for pruritus usually involves proprietary anti-inflammatory medications which can be applied topically to the skin or given orally or parenterally.
