Trichuris spp are a zoonotic parasitic nematode of dogs.

Species which are pathogenic to dogs include:

  • Trichuris vulpis

This parasite lives in the cecum and colon.

Clinical signs in infected puppies is usually characterized by diarrhea, weight loss and anemia[1].

Diagnosis is based on isolation and identification of operculated eggs in fecal samples.

Treatment is relatively effective with most anthelmintic drugs. In young puppies, supportive therapy may be required due to the moribund condition associated with this parasite.
