Avascular necrosis of the canine radial carpal bone is a rare orthopedic disease of the distal radial carpal bone characterized by osteolysis.
In humans, this disease is thought to be initiated by carpal fracture nonunion[1], but in dogs, the cause is unknown.
Resembling Preiser's disease of humans, this condition appears histologically as replacement of healthy bone with granulation tissue suggestive of ischaemic necrosis[2].
Diagnosis is usually suggestive from radiographic appearance but definitive diagnosis requires histological examination of bone biopsies.
Treatment is usually curative with pancarpal arthrodesis.
