Creatinine kinase (not to be confused with creatinine) is an enzyme produced by muscle cells and to a lesser extent, the brain, photoreceptor cells of the retina, hair cells of the inner ear, spermatozoa and smooth muscle,
Normal levels in dogs is 14 - 120 units/L.
Elevated levels of CK in dogs can be seen in a number of conditions such as:
- Cardiomyopathy
- Canine parvovirus
- Dermatomyositis
- Masticatory muscle myositis
- Thromboembolism
- Myocarditis
- Snake bite envenomation
- Malignant hyperthermia
- Rangelia spp infections
